Winter by the sea: 30 towns that never close

Of the 132 coastal places in the base, 97 live through winter and 65 do so without caveats. Below are thirty of them, sorted by the months the sea is warm, then by rent.

Winter liveability is our 1-to-5 estimate, not a measurement: no official statistic counts «how many venues are open in February». The score rests on the share of permanent residents, the seasonality of tourist load, town size and whether transport runs off-season. A five means: in January this is the same town as in July, minus the crowd. Each place page shows what the score is made of.

The thirty

What the table shows

• The Canaries hold the top of the list for a reason: 16 of the thirty are islands, with eight or nine months of warm sea and a winter five. The price is distance: four hours by air to the mainland.
• The cheapest one-bed in the thirty is Adra at 400 € asking. Cheap and alive in winter rarely coincide, and the table shows it: half the list rents above 800 €.
• The Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol resorts are almost absent — not because they are bad, but because in winter they are a different town: half the venues shut, buses thin out, the neighbours are gone.

How to verify in one evening

The score is ours, and you are free to disagree. Three checks that take an evening and no trip: look up the town bus timetable for January (resorts have a «summer» and a «winter» one, and winter is half as long); open a map of venues and switch to «open now» in February at eight in the evening; find the local residents' group and ask what shuts from November. If all three agree with our five — go and look.
