Tías is a municipality in the south-east of Lanzarote. The town itself sits on the gentle slope of the Montaña Blanca volcanic cone, its houses stepped up the hillside with the church at the top. The main settlement is not the town but Puerto del Carmen on the shore, a strip of resort building along the sea.
Tías lives on tourism, and in winter that shows: some places close and the load is below the season's. The hospital and the airport are fifteen to twenty minutes away — close by the standards of a small island. There are no international schools. The square metre is dearer than in Arrecife and cheaper than in Yaiza. The island is dry: around fifteen rainy days a year, and the water is desalinated.
