Teguise is a municipality on Lanzarote stretching right across the island from the east coast to the west; it also includes the islet of La Graciosa and the rest of the Chinijo archipelago. The Villa de Teguise was the capital of Lanzarote until eighteen forty-seven, when the seat moved to Arrecife. The old centre has barely changed since.
Today Teguise is the island's second municipality by population. It lives on tourism: resort building along the shore, and inland the old town with a Sunday market that draws people from across the island. Its winter score is below the capital's: part of what works in season closes for the winter. The hospital and the airport are about twenty minutes away. The square metre is cheaper than in Tías or Yaiza and dearer than in Arrecife.
