Sagunto is a town thirty kilometres north of Valencia, with around seventy thousand residents. On the hill above stand a castle and a Roman theatre: in two hundred and nineteen BC the town withstood a siege by Hannibal, and the Second Punic War began with it.
Like its neighbours, Sagunto has two halves: the town inland and Puerto de Sagunto on the shore, a district that grew in the twentieth century around a steelworks. The plant closed in the eighties and the town took it hard. Today life here is ordinary, housing is cheap, and a commuter train reaches Valencia in half an hour. For anyone moving this is a suburb of a big city with the sea attached, not a resort.
