Los Llanos de Aridane is La Palma's most populated town, with around twenty thousand residents. It stands in the Aridane valley on the west coast among banana plantations, the island's main farming.
In twenty twenty-one it was this valley that took the Cumbre Vieja eruption: the lava ran towards the sea for nearly three months and covered part of the built-up area in the villages nearby. Rebuilding continues. It is the first thing to ask about on the spot. Otherwise the western side is drier and sunnier than the east, housing on the island is cheap, and there is little tourism. The airport is about forty minutes away over the pass, and the hospital is in the town.
