San Sebastián de La Gomera is the capital of La Gomera, with around nine thousand residents. Columbus sailed from here in fourteen ninety-two on the voyage that ended in America; the house, the well and the church connected with that stop are still shown in the town.
La Gomera is small and steep. There is no international airport: you arrive by ferry from Los Cristianos on Tenerife, about an hour. In the middle lies the Garajonay national park — a relict laurel forest on the UNESCO list. The island also kept silbo, the whistled language used to talk across the ravines.
