Yaiza is the southernmost and westernmost municipality of Lanzarote. It lives on tourism and farming, and its best-known feature is the Timanfaya national park: fields of hardened lava left by the eighteenth-century eruptions that buried a third of the island in ash.
On that same ash they grow vines here, planted in hollows walled with stone against the wind — a landscape found nowhere else. The resort part of the municipality is Playa Blanca on the south shore, with a ferry to Fuerteventura. The hospital and the airport are further from here than from other parts of the island: about half an hour. The square metre is the dearest on Lanzarote. There are fewer than fifteen rainy days a year — no drier spot on the island.
