Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Santa Cruz is the capital of Tenerife and, with Las Palmas, of the Canary Islands: around two hundred and ten thousand residents. The city sits on the east coast at the foot of the Anaga hills and grew up around its port, still one of Spain's busiest for passengers.
For anyone moving, Santa Cruz is where Tenerife stops being a resort. Tourist load here is half that of Adeje or Puerto de la Cruz, while the city has a university, hospitals, the port and the airport within its bounds. The square metre is the cheapest on the island. The main local event is the February carnival, listed as a festival of international tourist interest; during it the city becomes impassable and accommodation costs what it costs in August.
