Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote and the island's most populated municipality, with around seventy-one thousand residents. It is also the smallest in area — a dense city strung along the shore from El Cable to the Los Mármoles quay. It takes its name from the reefs that shelter the bay: arrecife is Spanish for reef.
For anyone moving, Arrecife is the one place on the island where everything is at hand. The hospital and the airport are eight minutes away, the port is in the town, and schools and doctors work all year. The other municipalities — Teguise, Tías, Yaiza — live on tourism and are quieter in winter. The square metre here is the cheapest on Lanzarote. The island is dry: around twenty rainy days a year, drinking water from desalination, and a bill that differs from the mainland's.

Paperwork and practicalities
