Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital of La Palma island, with around fifteen thousand residents. The town stands on the east coast inside the crater of an old volcano, stretched in a narrow band between the hills and the water. In the sixteenth century this was the empire's third port after Seville and Antwerp. The balconied houses on Calle O'Daly remain from those days.
La Palma is the greenest of the Canaries. Cloud off the ocean catches on the ridge and waters a laurel forest. In twenty twenty-one the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted, lava covered villages on the west, and the consequences are still visible there. For anyone moving this is a quiet island with cheap housing, and with a caveat: it is geologically alive.
