Best places to live in coastal Spain: five lists, not one ranking

There is no single list of the best places, and anyone handing you one has substituted their weights for yours. Here are five lists for five different questions.

The base holds 132 coastal places in Spain. You could rank them all in one list, but it would be useless: someone who needs a school for their children and someone who needs warm sea in November want different towns, and no combined score shows that.

If you need the town alive in winter

65 places in the base hold the top winter score. These are towns that work all year: bars open, transport running, people on the street in January. Sorted cheapest first.

If you want a longer swimming season

Sorted by the number of months the sea stays above 20 °C. Sunshine hours have nothing to do with it: the north can be sunny and the water still cold.

If you do not want a car

53 places of 132 where living without a car is comfortable. That is rare: the Spanish coast was built for the car, and most resorts stretch along a highway.

If money is the constraint

The cheapest places whose price comes from a source rather than a listings portal. The appraised value is published by the ministry from 25,000 residents upwards, so small towns are missing here — not because they are expensive, but because nobody computes their price officially.

If you are moving with children

At least two international schools and a hospital within twenty minutes. The second condition looks redundant right up until the first night with a child running a fever.

Why some towns appear on none of the lists

That is not a flaw in the base but the shape of the coast. A town alive in winter is a real town, and a real town costs more than a resort and usually sits a little further from the water. The warmest sea means the south and the islands, where prices are higher and summer crowds three times heavier. Every list pulls in its own direction, and no place in the base wins all five at once.

Which gives you the practical move: choose what you are willing to give up, not what you want. The list of things people want is much the same for everyone and leads nowhere; the list of things you will trade away is personal and cuts the choice down to a handful of towns immediately.
