Granada is not on the shore. It lies sixty kilometres inland at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, and enters our base under the general rule of within a hundred and fifty kilometres of the sea. Its centrepiece is the Alhambra: the palace complex and fortress of the Moorish rulers, whose last capital Granada was until fourteen ninety-two.
Today it is a university city: there are a great many students, and that sets both the price of rent and the rhythm of the year. The winter here is a real one, with frost at night — the ski resort in the Sierra Nevada is less than an hour away. Summers are hot and dry. The Costa Tropical is an hour's drive, but this is not a seaside city, and living here means choosing mountains over beach. Housing costs noticeably less than on the coast.
