Torre del Mar
Torre del Mar is not a town of its own but the seaward half of Vélez-Málaga, and that is the first thing to understand. The town hall, the residents' register and the tax office are four kilometres away, uphill in Vélez itself. People have always lived here: under the Romans a trading town called Maenoba stood on this spot, and in the eleventh century the Arabs called it the port of Vélez. Closer to our own time, the Larios family's sugar mill fed the place for a hundred years — its walls now hold a sugar museum. There are three lighthouses. The oldest stands wedged between apartment blocks: the sea moved back, the tower did not.
This is a resort for Spaniards rather than foreign buyers, and you can see the difference at once. The promenade is long, the sand is wide, the buildings are close and tall, and in August there is no room to move — but the crowd comes from Málaga and Granada, not from Manchester. There are far fewer foreign residents than in Nerja or Torrox, and housing costs less. Work rests on three things: tourism, the mango and avocado fields inland, and fish. The neighbouring port of Caleta de Vélez holds the largest fishing fleet on the Costa del Sol. No railway; buses run to Málaga and Nerja, and the airport is forty minutes away.
