Fuengirola
Fuengirola is built up more tightly than any other town on this coast: ten square kilometres almost entirely covered, more than eight thousand people per square kilometre. There is no land left and no room to build — and that will not change. In 2009 it became the only town in Spain where every single beach won a blue flag for water quality. The history runs long: a Phoenician settlement, a Roman port, and in 956 the Arabs built the castle of Sohail above the river mouth, which still stands. Fuengirola only became a town in its own right in 1841, when it split from Mijas.
The foreign residents here are not the ones you find next door. The largest community is not British but Finnish: around eight thousand people, with their own shops, doctors and services in Finnish. Swedes and Britons come after them. Transport is the best on the coast: the commuter line ends here, three more stations sit inside the town, and the airport is twenty minutes away by rail. The hospital is 22 minutes off and there are four international schools. In short: people move here when they need everything to work in winter and without a car.

Fuengirola sits in Costa del Sol, right on the water.
