Best time to visit Tenerife: weather, sea and the price of a hotel night, month by month

At Tenerife's south airport the coolest month, January, averages 21.7 °C by day: 6.7 °C below the warmest, August. The hotel price swings harder. In the twelve months to August 2026, the average a hotel actually got for a room ranged from €131 a night in June to €174 in March, 33% more.
So «when to go» splits into two questions. Weather settles less than you might expect: even the coolest month at the south airport averages 21.7 °C by day and 15.2 °C by night. Price and crowds settle more. They follow the calendars of northern Europe and of Spain, not the thermometer. Below, month by month, with the source of every figure.

Tenerife month by month
Weather is the AEMET normal for 1981–2010 at the south airport (64 m, in Granadilla de Abona). We use the south because it took 79% of the island's hotel nights over the last twelve months. The sea is the 2015–2024 average off Adeje. Hotel figures are for the whole island, September 2025 to August 2026.

Why winter is the expensive season
Tenerife's hotels are busiest in August: 2,523,005 hotel nights, and the fullest beds of the year at 79%. Yet a room cost less then than in every month from December to April. What sets the price is not how many guests come, but where they come from.
February belongs to foreign guests: 91% of hotel nights were by people who live outside Spain. August belongs to Spain: residents of Spain took 20% of nights, against 9% in February. In the three dearest months guests from abroad took at least 90% of nights; in the three cheapest, no more than 83%.
This is not one odd year. In the twelve months to August 2025, the cheapest night came in June (€120) and the dearest in December (€168). Across the twelve months a night now costs 6% more on average.
Season by season
December to February. In the south the day reaches 21.7–22.8 °C and the night stays at 15–16.5 °C. The sea off Adeje is 19.6–21.5 °C, and a hotel night costs €169–171. The sea reaches the 20 °C our base uses as the swimming line in two of the three months. December is the wettest month, and even that means 3.5 days with rain in the south and 5.4 days in Santa Cruz. Days are at their shortest: 10 h 20 min of daylight on 15 December, against 7 h 51 min in London. February has the year's highest share of guests from abroad, 91% of nights.
March to May. In the south the day reaches 23.1–23.9 °C and the night stays at 15.6–17 °C. The sea off Adeje is 19.5–20.7 °C, and a hotel night costs €132–174. March is the dearest month of the twelve at €174, and it also has the coldest sea, 19.5 °C. Then the price falls fast: by May a night cost €132, 25% less than in March. May had the emptiest hotels of the year, with 64% of beds taken.
June to August. In the south the day reaches 25.4–28.4 °C and the night stays at 18.8–21.1 °C. The sea off Adeje is 21.8–23.4 °C, and a hotel night costs €131–163. June is the cheapest month for a hotel night, €131. On 15 June the day lasts 13 h 57 min, the longest of the twelve. June and July average no rain days at all in the south. July brings the most sun: 295 hours at the south airport and 19.8 clear days. Then residents of Spain arrive: in August they took 20% of hotel nights.
September to November. In the south the day reaches 24.8–27.9 °C and the night stays at 18.2–21.1 °C. The sea off Adeje is 22.8–24 °C, and a hotel night costs €137–153. September has the warmest sea of the year, 24 °C, and the third-cheapest hotel night, €137. October keeps the sea at 23.9 °C for €147. November brings the rain back, 4.7 days in Santa Cruz, and the price climbs to €153.
When the sea is warm and the night costs less
Put the two series side by side and five months sit in both the warmer half of the year for the sea and the cheaper half for a hotel night: June, July, September, October, and November. The line is the middle of each series: the sea off Adeje above 21.7 °C, a night below €158. September stands out, with the warmest water of the year and the third-cheapest night.
This is an observation on monthly series, not a promise about any particular dates. A hotel over a holiday inside a cheap month can cost as much as in winter, and a monthly average does not see that.
South, capital and north in the same month
The island is small but steep, and the station you read changes the answer more than the month does. Tenerife North airport stands 632 m up above La Laguna. It is cooler than the south airport in every month, by 3.5 °C in August and by 5.4 °C in December. It has 64 rain days a year against 15.2 in the south. The air is damper too: 69–79% relative humidity by month, against 62–68% in the south.
Sun does not simply favour the south. The south airport gets more hours than Santa Cruz only from November to March. From April to October, the capital on the north-east coast is sunnier: 337 hours in July against 295 in the south. Rain falls there more often, though: 29.7 days a year.
Puerto de la Cruz, on the north coast, gets no weather figures in this article. AEMET publishes normals for four stations on Tenerife, and none of them is on the north coast at sea level. The north airport is no stand-in: it sits 632 m higher. Station list.
Nothing shuts for the season
Social Security counts the employers in cafés and restaurants, hotels and shops every month. In resorts where the season ends, that count falls hard out of season: in Ciutadella on Menorca, the quietest month of 2025 had 52% of the busiest. On Tenerife it barely moves. At our three places the quietest month kept 96–98% of the best. Social Security series.
