Vigo is Galicia's most populated city: around two hundred and ninety-four thousand residents, the fourteenth in Spain. It is not a provincial capital — Pontevedra is — which makes Vigo the largest Spanish city without that status. It stands on a slope along a long inlet, dropping steeply to the water.
The city lives on its port: the fishing fleet here is one of Europe's largest, alongside a car plant and shipyards. For anyone moving that means work and city life all year rather than a season. Housing costs less than on the Mediterranean. Across the mouth of the inlet lie the Cíes islands — a national park with beaches, open by quota and only in summer.
