Salobreña is a small town on the Costa Tropical with around twelve thousand residents. The white old town sits on a lone rock in the middle of a plain, with a Moorish fortress on top from which you can see both the sea and the Sierra Nevada. Below, around the rock, run the sugar cane fields worked here for centuries.
The sugar mill has closed, and the plain now grows mango and avocado, as elsewhere on this coast. For anyone moving, Salobreña offers a mild winter and a very compact town where everything is within walking distance except the beach: a couple of kilometres from the old town. Housing costs less than on the Costa del Sol. Granada is an hour away, Málaga airport an hour and a half.
