La Línea de la Concepción stands on the sandy isthmus joining the Rock of Gibraltar to the mainland, with around sixty-four thousand residents. The town takes its name from the line of fortifications the Spanish built here in the eighteenth century after the Rock passed to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht.
The border shapes everything here. Thousands of residents walk across to work in Gibraltar each day, and the queue at the crossing sets the shape of their day.
