Benalmádena
Benalmádena has three parts and they live quite differently. At the top, on the mountainside, is the old village. In the middle is Arroyo de la Miel — the real town, with the train station, the schools and the market, and that is where daily life happens. At the bottom is Benalmádena Costa: the marina, the hotels, the promenade. Together that is twenty-seven square kilometres climbing from the water to the mountains and dropping to cliff in places. People have been here a long time: a cave on Monte Calamorro holds paintings around eighteen thousand years old.
The town lives on visitors: thirteen thousand hotel beds, seventeen beaches, a funfair open since 1973, an aquarium, a cable car up the mountain and a Buddhist stupa thirty-three metres high, the largest in Europe. Almost a third of residents are foreign, mostly British and Swedish, and both have their own shops and doctors. But that is rarely why people choose Benalmádena. The train from Arroyo de la Miel reaches the airport in fifteen minutes, the hospital is close and there are three international schools. You can manage without a car here, and that is true almost nowhere else on this coast.

Benalmádena sits in Costa del Sol, right on the water. You can live here without a car: our rating is 4 out of 5, rare on the Spanish coast, and the town has its own train station. 29.2% of residents are foreign nationals per the census: Spanish is not the only language you will hear on the street. The airport is 15 minutes away, closer than for most places in the database.
