Torremolinos
The Costa del Sol began at Torremolinos. In the early fifties it was a fishing village that had counted as part of Málaga since 1924. Ten years later it was the first resort on this coast and the first in Andalusia; film crews came, and the Hotel Pez Espada of 1959 still stands as a monument to that wave. The name translates literally: «tower of the mills». The fourteenth-century tower stands at the end of the main shopping street. The mills are gone.
The town is still the biggest tourist destination in Andalusia: over eighty hotels and more than twenty thousand beds, fourth in Spain. Seven kilometres of beach, all of it urban: Los Álamos, Playamar, El Bajondillo and La Carihuela, which grew out of the fishermen's quarter. Residents have come from a hundred and thirty countries; about a quarter are foreign and three quarters of those are from the EU. The main difference from its neighbours is transport: five train stations inside the town, the airport fifteen minutes away, the hospital 7. You simply do not need a car here.
