Avilés is the third most populated town in Asturias, with around seventy-seven thousand people. It sits at the head of an inlet and comes in two halves: a well-preserved old centre with arcades, and the industrial zone around the port that grew in the fifties around a steelworks.
That split sets both the price and the reputation. Housing here is among the cheapest in our base, and the air and the river were a problem for a long time, one the town remembers.
