Mazarrón is a coastal municipality in Murcia with around thirty-five thousand residents. They live in two separate places: thirteen thousand in Mazarrón itself, which sits inland, and eleven thousand in Puerto de Mazarrón on the shore. The rest are spread through villages along the coast. Six kilometres separate the town from the port.
The place takes its name from its mines: lead, silver and iron were dug here from Roman times, and the abandoned shafts still stand in the hills. Today the municipality lives on farming and holidays. By winter humidity it is the driest place in our mainland base. Housing is cheap, Cartagena and Murcia are about an hour away, and there are no international schools. In summer the shore is full; in winter it is quiet but not dead.
