Mojácar
Mojácar is a small town in the south-east of Almería province with around seven thousand seven hundred residents. It comes in two parts: Mojácar Pueblo, a white village on a hillside a couple of kilometres from the shore, and Mojácar Playa, the resort strip along the sea. You drive between them, and they are two different places.
The upper village is the Andalusian picture: white houses in steps, narrow streets, a view of the sea. Painters started coming in the fifties, and the town has kept a reputation as a place for incomers ever since. There are many foreign residents. The drawbacks for anyone moving are plain: life up top is hard without a car, the coastal strip empties in winter, and the hospital and airport are far. But it is dry, sunny and noticeably cheaper than the Costa del Sol.
