Los Alcázares is a small town on the Mar Menor with around twenty thousand residents. The Mar Menor is a lagoon cut off from the sea by the La Manga sand bar. Its water is warm, shallow and calm, and that is what people come for. The town became a municipality in its own right only in nineteen eighty-three.
The place is also known for its healing mud. People have come for it since Roman times. For anyone moving, Los Alcázares means very shallow warm water, flat ground and cheap housing. The drawbacks are plain too: in recent years the lagoon has suffered from fertiliser run-off and algal blooms, and that is worth establishing on the spot. Murcia airport is twenty minutes away, Cartagena half an hour, and there are no international schools.
