San Javier is a municipality on the north of the Mar Menor with around thirty-six thousand residents. It takes in coastal Santiago de la Ribera and the middle and northern parts of the La Manga sand bar. A military air base and a flying academy stand here.
For anyone moving this is the same Mar Menor as its neighbours: a shallow warm lagoon on one side, open sea on the other. The pluses are flat ground, low prices and short trips to the airport and Cartagena. The drawbacks are the lagoon's: its condition has worsened in recent years because of run-off from the fields, and that is better asked about on the spot. In summer the sand bar is full. In winter it empties far more than the mainland part.
