San Pedro del Pinatar is the northernmost municipality on the Murcian coast, with around twenty-six thousand residents. It faces two bodies of water at once: the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor lagoon. To the north lies a nature park of salt pans and dunes — the pans where salt is still worked, and where flamingos come.
For anyone moving this is a combination: sea, lagoon and nature reserve within a few kilometres. Housing is cheap. Murcia airport is half an hour away and Alicante an hour. The drawback is the Mar Menor's: the water quality in the lagoon has raised questions in recent years, and that is worth checking on the spot rather than from photographs. There are no international schools, and the nearest large hospital is in Cartagena.
