San Roque is the third most populated town of the Campo de Gibraltar, with around thirty-five thousand people. It was founded in seventeen oh four by residents of Gibraltar who left after the British took the Rock; the town still carries that community's arms and title.
Today the municipality is arranged unusually. The town itself sits on a hill inland, while Sotogrande lies on the shore — golf courses, a marina and expensive housing, one of the priciest spots on this coast. Fifteen kilometres and two very different lives separate them. A petrochemical plant stands nearby and is visible. The sea is warm all year, and the airports of Gibraltar and Málaga are twenty minutes and an hour and a half away.
