Alcúdia
Alcúdia is a town in the north of Mallorca with twenty-two thousand residents. It is older than most of its neighbours: the ruins of the Roman town of Pollentia lie beside it, and the town itself is ringed by a medieval wall that survives almost intact. From the old centre to the sea is a couple of kilometres — the port and the beaches sit apart, with the resort quarter grown up between them.
The north of Mallorca lives differently from Palma. In winter most of what works in summer closes, and tourist load drops to the bottom of the scale. The airport is nearly an hour away and the hospital in Inca 22 minutes. About a third of residents are foreign. In exchange: a quiet winter, the Serra de Tramuntana close by, and a square metre below Palma's. Anyone choosing between the city and the north should come in February. In August the difference is invisible.

Alcúdia sits in Mallorca, Balearic Islands, right on the water. 28.7% of residents are foreign nationals per the census: Spanish is not the only language you will hear on the street.
