May is the first month you can swim on Mallorca if you are not easily chilled: sea at 19 °C, air at 19 °C. The water only reaches twenty degrees in June, but empty beaches in May are worth it. Load is 3 out of 5, and in Pollença and Alcúdia in the north the same — their season starts later.
For anyone moving, May shows the island in working order: schools are in session, markets run on weekdays rather than on a visitor timetable, and prices have not yet jumped. The square metre on Mallorca runs €3,753 in Palma and €4,200 in Alcúdia: above Tenerife and Lanzarote, well below Ibiza at €6,800. And the gap between winter and summer life here is smaller than on Ibiza.
