September is the best month for the water, though the beaches here are unusual: black volcanic sand and a shore open to the ocean. That is why a complex of seawater pools was built in the centre in the seventies; it still works and stands in for a sheltered bay. That is the north's defining trade: green and handsome, but you swim where you are meant to.
