December on Gran Canaria is 20 °C by day and 21 °C in the sea. You can swim, and the island is at its busiest of the winter: load 3 out of 5, and higher still in the south: 5 in Mogán, 5 in Maspalomas. North and south live differently here, and in winter it shows in the crowds.
The south is Maspalomas with its dunes and Mogán, where Germans, Britons and Scandinavians come all year; even January there is 19 °C by day. The north is Las Palmas, a city of 384,023 people with its own life, a university and Las Canteras beach in the middle of the built-up area. In the south prices are known only from listings: €2,900 to €3,100 per square metre. The north has the ministry's appraisal: €2,321 in Las Palmas and €1,796 in Telde. Appraisals run below asking prices, so the two sets of figures cannot be compared directly.
